I thought I'd try to cull the conversation into it's own topic - a lot of good ideas mixed in with the "aircraft submissions" thread.
Anyway... I've been pondering this for a little bit, and I have a few potential solutions:
The first option is the simplest: just let it ride for a while and see how it works out. Anyone can use anything they want within the confines of the league rules. (single engine, piston, no turbos).
But, based on some of the other conversation, this has a lot of potential to make the league a "Carenado C-185 racing league", which that in itself makes it unfair to those who cannot afford or do not want to purchase payware add-ons.
So, I have another proposal: Over the course of the 8-race season, each pilot can only use a given make/model 1 time. This has the advantage of broadening our horizons, as well as making the league a bit more enjoyable for those who like to fly something other than the 185.
This can be carried out in one of three ways:
1) Each race course is designated a particular make model.
2) Each race course is designated a particular class of aircraft
3) Each race course is "pilots option", with the caveat that he cannot use that model again during that season.
The first option seems the most "fair", in that we're all racing against each other in the same airframe. But this will limit the whole league to 8 aircraft types. (maybe good, maybe bad... we haven't yet reached 8 in the "whitelist project")
The second option seems the most "fun", as we pit the C152s against the Super Cubs, and then the C-195s against the C-185s, and has the potential to allow "turbo" bush planes such as the twotter, Kodiak, and Caravan.
And the third option seems the most "strategic", as you must determine if you want to fly your speed demon on the "fast, flat" course, or if you want to save it for a course that has a lot of altitude gains.
Anyway.... thoughts?
