Here's what I get if I use the default FS weather (it's actually pretty interesting conditions — lots of wind, and lots of clouds): Local conditions:Wind calm, Visibility 3/4mi, Overcast, Ceiling 300', Temperature 42ºF, Dew point 40ºF Altimeter 30.90 Then, when I do the flight via AP, at 3,500' and 4x sim rate, I get the following winds: KML FileThe winds at the 6 waypoints are: - 0kts, 0º (PADQ)
- 13kts, 91º
- 20kts, 88º
- 20kts, 90º
- 18kts, 148º
- 15kts, 107º (LKK)

Oh, Teson, and I just noticed that you won the Western Roundup at Sim-Outhouse! Congratulations!!! That's quite an achievement, considering the massive field they had! (Wish we had such a turnout here...)

- 130kts, 91º
- 200kts, 88º
- 200kts, 90º
- 180kts, 148º
- 150kts, 107º (LKK)
I'm quite getting the same conditions (weather, vis ect) with FS9. The winds at the 6 waypoints are: - 0kts, 342ºM (PADQ) on ground
- 14kts, 73ºM, 3500ft
- 21kts, 70ºM, 3500ft
- 22kts, 75ºM, 3500ft
- 20kts, 129ºM, 3500ft
- 16kts, 89ºM, 3500ft (LKK)
- 0kts, 342ºM, on ground (LKK)
Note: MagVar is about 18°E, so I'm getting the same wind directions as you do in FSX. Jeppesen real weather seems to be an option for everybody to have the same weather. For the next circuit it's a good solution, as the weather situation is pretty interesting in the area, and looks pretty good even with default FS weather engine. From my side we can try it out and see how we like it.

(Wish we had such a turnout here...) I don't know, how I managed to come first, or how I deserve it. Man, I crashed twice - inattention and trying to push the plane to the limit. Furthermore, spookster was flying the same plane, and he's certainly one of the most serious competitors out there. I'd never have thought that I'd be able to get ahead of him with 20 min penalty. I've looked at it a little, and I believe the winds again made all the difference ! Fitting our current discussion - some consideration of winds during the race is indeed necessary to remove the luck (or planning) part of wind from the equation. That is, if we indeed want race results to be governed by how the pilots has flown the race. I guess many pilots participating to these type of events don't care for that, or about their score. Most pilots in the Western Roundup were just along for the ride along a course through nice scenery in interesting planes. We shouldn't make it cumbersome for these pilots either. I'd suggest we try out the next month's circuit with the Jeppesen weather, and see how it goes.

Ok, let's go with the default "real" weather then, and we'll see how it works out.

On the current Larsen to Old Harbor route, REX in FSX has been dealing me 44-66 knot winds every day for who knows how long. I don't have time to see if it's correct or not, maybe it is, or maybe it isn't. I don't know where REX gets its weather from, but that definitely doesn't sound correct. If you look at this month's wind history for AKK, it's been pretty mellow for the last few weeks: There are only two big weather stations on the island — one at each end of the route (AKK & PADQ). Some more do exist, but most weather programs don't use them. And even if you do check them out, their current winds are in the 3-4 kts range for the area you're talking about. So, it seems REX cannot really deal well with sparsely covered areas, so it might be best to either use the default weather, or something like FSrealWX (which is what I'm using, and it's been pretty close to the real thing). As far as the other issues regarding routes and altitudes are concerned, we can definitely discuss that, but the thing is — some people like challenges, and others like to relax. It'll be hard to find a middle way that will please both. But for now, if you don't want to scout your own route, you could just look up where others have flown already, and use the same route (e.g. Teson's or mine). If you download the available KML file (from the "Get full TSV / KML / Maps" option on the right side), you can see in detail (in Google Earth, for example) where exactly each flight went. Also, if you're not really into the competitive aspect of the race, why don't you just ignore the limitations? Take the start and end-points, and fly between them however you want. Sure, you'll end up with some penalties, but that shouldn't really matter if you're just looking for a relaxing flight in nice scenery.
