Last-minute change:
The last leg back to Talkeetna will not be scored. You can take all the time to want on that leg.
It will end with a short landing challenge on RW 18 at PATK.
This challenge is closely inspired by the STOL competition held during the yearly Valdez Fly In and Air Show, and follows the STOL landing rules there.
(There are plenty of other great videos of these events available on Youtube - just search for "Valdez STOL competition")
Landing is on RW 18 at Talkeetna PATK.
The reference touchdown line is the runway treshold at RW 18 (see shot below).
Short Field Landing Rules:
1. Main gear must land on or beyond the runway threshold line.
2. Main gear touchdown prior to the runway threshold is disqualifying.
3. Landing distance will be measured from the runway threshold (not from the touchdown point !! ) to the main gear once stopped.
If you have default PATK airport (no addon airport installed), you don't have to do anything special regarding the scoring.
Just fly the leg, touch down beyond the runway threshold of RW 18 (but as close as possible to the threshold), and stop in as short a distance as possible.
I will track participants' results in a separate table on the spreadsheet.
I will use Duenna to define the location of runway threshold, touchdown location and stopping location.
You may want to review your short field landing technique to achieve best results
You can compare your performance with the results obtained by the participants to this year's Valdez STOL competition:
www.valdezalaska.org/documents/2013_Competition_Results.pdf
Best landing distance was 54 feet from the reference line
This is something I wanted to try out for some time, as the ability to hit the planned landing spot precisely and stopping quickly is an important skill for a bush pilot. I know we're not very numerous, and it's a little late for this for the last event of the series, but I just want to see how it works out. Thanks.
